Freezing power
The amount of fresh food that can be frozen to -18°C in 24 hours, this is important for taste and texture.
Energy use
Compares energy use for each fridge-freezer taking size into account.
Recommended thermostat setting
The manufacturers recommended thermostat setting should result in a temperature colder than -18°C. Fewer than two stars means you will have to adjust the thermostat setting until it matches the correct setting.
Freezer temperature stability
How closely the freezer maintains the correct temperature even when the room temperature changes. Five stars mean you won’t need to adjust the thermostat, while two stars means that you will.
Quietness and vibration
Five stars means the model is quiet, one star is noisy.
Ease of defrosting
How easy it is to collect defrosted water from the freezer. Models with top marks are frost-free.
Reliability
We research the reliability of freezers and give them excellent, good, satisfactory, poor or very poor ratings.

New freezer models are now labelled A+++, A++, A+, A, B or C, based on their energy consumption. An A+++ rating indicates the most efficient category, C the least. We've found energy labels aren't always accurate, so we calculate our own energy costs for each freezer we test.
