Microwaves: Compare features & prices Next Red 800W review Back to Results

This Next 800W solo microwave certainly looks like a lot of fun - it's bright red and you can team it up with a funky-looking kettle and toaster to give your kitchen a mini-makeover for not much more than £100. But is it any good? We've tested it at the Which? test lab, so read on to find out.

Another 3 out of 3 Faulty
I wanted a red microwave to match the other items in my kitchen & bought this model as it was a best buy. I returned it as the window was misting over due to steam getting in between the glass panels. Next replaced it without any problem, however the new oven wouldn't switch on. I took it back & obtained a replacement which appeared to be working, but when I took the food out it was stone cold. I disconnected & reconnected the appliance to the mains as recommended in the user manual to no avail. I returned it to Next who have refunded the money. I find it hard to believe Next's response that these microwaves are tested before leaving the factory & think 'Which' should give serious consideration to removing 'Best By' status from this product.

Good performance so far.
Bought this microwave based on the 'Best Buy' status and it has preformed very well to date (about six weeks use). It is used every day. It heats very evenly and I find the electronic controls easy to understand although the manual could have been better written. The interior light could be brighter because it's not that easy to see if things have boiled over. Very quick delivery from Next. Overall considered excellent value for money.

Which? - Next response.
Thank you for posting your reviews of this microwave – here is a response from Next:

“As far as we are aware we have not received any customer complaints for our microwaves cutting out. Every microwave is tested on the production line before packing where they are tested for 3 minutes at full power, whilst other microwaves are also randomly tested for 3 hours at full power. In light of the negative reviews, we have instructed the factory to carry out further testing on our microwaves to see if any of the reported faults are replicated and modifications made. If customers do have an issue with their microwave they can contact Customer Services on 0844 844 8999"

No refund yet after more than two months
An update to the review I posted on 25/8/2012. I requested a refund for the faulty product from Next, the courier failed to collect the item on two separate agreed days (very inconvenient as I had to wait at home for them), collected it unannounced on a third day, the refund has not been made yet after more than two months, and when I phoned the Next customer service today they asked me to send a photocopy of the receipt to a postal address. However value for money this oven may seem, it is most definitely not worth the hassle to deal with its only supplier. Avoid at all costs.

Made from British Leyland steel?
When I packed this up for a refund, I noticed the screws in the back were rusty. It may be news to Next, but there is some moisture in a kitchen.

3 out of 3 faulty
Made an incredible amount of noise during its short life - which turned out to be an unbelievable 4 months. Very, very poor - how on earth did this rubbish get through any kind of testing?

Faulty item delivered
I ordered a Next red microwave oven from the Next website after reading the Which? review, and it was delivered after less than 48 hours. Unfortunately it turned out to be a faulty item: the first time we used it, it turned itself off halfway through the intended cooking time. The troubleshooting section of the user's manual says that, on first use, the appliance's microcomputer may experience some problems, which can be solved by disconnecting and reconnecting the appliance to the mains. We tried this several times, but the oven always turned itself off after 4 or 5 seconds. Next's customer services offered a replacement or a refund, and we choose the refund because they told us that the waiting time for a new oven is currently several weeks.
