The Panasonic NN-CF778S combination microwave oven cooks in convection, microwave or grill mode and offers multi-step programming so you can change the power level mid-recipe. We put this combi microwave to the test to see if it did the job when creating a range of different meals.

Annoyingly Useless
We bought this, as per many others, based on Which review and the looks. We had a Panasonic prior to this which was too small and was about 10 years old but worked well. Positives: The lack of turntable is brilliant. It allows for awkward items to fit in and work. The drop down door is brilliant (so long as you don't want to mount the thing high up). Negatives: Everything else. It cooks very unevenly, defrosts randomly (in manual) and changes what it is going to do on a daily basis. If I didn't know any better, I would say it has a 'pot luck' setting attached to everything you do. Some days it will warm a mug of tea in 40s, other days (same mug/temp) will do the sum total of basically nothing in the same period. We have had it repaired once (didn't make any difference that we could tell) and it is now out of warranty so we are stuffed. As one of the previous commenters said - it also requires multiple presses/twiddles just to get the thing going. If it wasn't for the fact that all our previous microwaves were Panasonic and great, I would be seriously put of this brand. I am also slightly concerned that Which rate it so well. Whilst I think they get most things right, the issue of longevity is something I would actively point out as a major failing with all their testing (granted - this is somewhat hard to do but there must be ways of speeding up the process to give an approximation). This is also true of the Which best buy BBQ that I bought and kealed over the minute it got cold but that's another story and afraid that is not the only product! We are now going for the NN-ST479S - Which best buy No.1 - 80% - and hope (as a microwave only) it does warming and defrosting well as that is all we use it for.

Very Impressed!
We were drawn to this combination microwave oven as we owned the Panasonic NN-CD767 which had an identical control panel but a conventional turntable and side opening door. The CD767 had lasted us for 5 years of pretty heavy use. Unlike the typical user (according to Which), we do much more than defrosting and reheating; roasts, baking, sautéing, etc so all the functions of a combination oven are well used. We like the simplicity of the control panel as it allows for easy selection of any of the combination functions without lots of preset buttons for automatic programs. Microwave/combination cooking is not much different to any other cooking once you understand the principles by which they operate. We were a little nervous about the flat bed design having owned ovens with turntables for some 30 years but in practice we have found the flat bed design to be an improvement. It allows for a greater selection of cooking dishes to be used and has the ability to cook on two levels but we have not yet tested this latter feature. Overall the CF778 has a much better build quality than our previous CD767; while the dimensions are very similar, physically it is much more robust. Time will tell about its longevity but so far we have been very impressed with the cooking results.

trips rcd
Bought this based on loads of positive reviews. However shortly after buying, our mains rcd started tripping out. The house is 8 years old & it had never done this before. We'd go a day or two or even up to 8-9 days between incidents, but then other times it would trip out 10 times a day! We've had every socket in our house off the wall, an electrician out evenings and weekends.......expensive habit.......& it turns out the culprit is our shiny new combi microwave| John Lewis were brilliant, as usual, & took the thing back without any issue, but we're still left with a hefty electrician bill. I've now found a few other reviews saying this micro trips their rcd, so if you go for this model be aware of potential issue. I assumed that an appliance would only trip the rcd when used. It doesn't. In our case it only had to be plugged in, not on, to cause the problem. Its been gone 3 weeks now & no further rcd problems - so no question that this micro was the culprit I'm afraid.

On and on and on...
Follow up to my review in January 2011.. My flatbed panasonic continues to function flawlessly. Excellent in general use and wonderful for large quantities of marmalade. Bring to the boil then just set to a lower power and it'll simmer gently for hours, no foaming surges!.. My opinion about this product has strengthened over this past 14 months, a real winner!!

Pretty pleased
The NN-CF778S has been working really well for me for over a year so far. I like the fact that the door drops down, rather than opens sideways, as it makes loading and unloading easier. But, one of my favourite features is the fact that you can change the microwave power on the fly, just like you can turn a hob down to a simmer once something is boiling. The use of an inverter means that you get properly adjustable power, rather than full power for 30 seconds followed by no power for 30 seconds. The fan oven isn't up to the same standard as a good full sized fan oven, as it seems to use the grill elements to provide the heat. I tend to find this cooks the top of food a little faster than I want.

Panasonic Microwave lover
I have had two previous Panasonic microwaves, in fact I gave my original one to my son when he was at University ten years ago (it was 15 years old at that time) The replacement has served us well until, through user error I have just broken it. I bought the NN CF778S 18 months ago to take to a holiday home and it even survived the air trip as hold luggage in the packaging that it was delivered in by Amazon! I absolutely love it although the grilling is not perfect. I was shocked to read of other people's experiences. I am just about to buy a replacement for the one I have broken and still intend to buy this model. After reading other people's problems I will certainly have my fingers crossed that my faith is not in vain.

very poor, used twice then when attempting to use for the 3rd time, powered on then opened the door, load bang and a flash of light from the inside with such force it tripped the main power switch in the whole house, before it was even in use. Panasonic insisted on an inspection which turned up a faulty switch with the door casing there are 3 switches one was faulty hence the explosion when I opened the door. Would not touch another one of these with a barge pole. I suggest which re-evaluates this oven. I had to insist on a refund as Panasonic wanted to do a repair. Stood my ground on safety grounds as I could have been injured and managed to get a refund from Dixons.

Wish I hadn't bought this
Again, bought as a result of best buy. I have hardly used it. It has been back for repair, still does not work properly. Wish I had kept my old Panasonic! The Yorkshire pudding at Christmas was a disaster. I can now only use it as a microwave which rather defeats the object of buying a combination, as the convection temperature is not right.

Purchased from Kitchen Aid at the end of June 2010. Kitchen Aid we now know is part of the comet group Little used until September. Would not maintain conventional cooking temperature, and only heating one side. Then discovered Panasonic had sold the warrenty to Comet. It took the comet group from September to early December to repair it. Attempted to use it,sparks from the right hand side, and a smell of burning. Kitchen Aid policy to attempt another repair,if not replacement. Eventually after repeated phone calls, refunded in full. I would not buy another Panasonic. The casing was too hot to touch, and we were informed by Comet engineers that the cooking temperatures had a manufactures tolerance of +/- 10c Degrees. The conventional oven whilst set at 220, gave an internal temp, of 165c, on one side the other side food was raw. We bought it as a Which best buy. I think Which should re test this item! We have various Meile products which are excellent, and have bought a Meile micro wave/grill. It does not appear on the Wich trials. Why

Had an old Philips Cooktronic years ago using 'flatbed' technology, could never understand why their successor, Whirlpool, and other makes use turntables, other than perhaps for manufacturing cheapness... As for this Panasonic so far so good. It performs extremely well on all functions, it's quiet and appears to be extremely well constructed. Good uniform microwave cooking. The variable 'inverter' continuous power is a real bonus for reduced power settings, no more boiling over as when a conventional magnetron cuts in and out...Convection cooking also very even, temperatures precise. I agree that the outside casing of the oven gets quite hot but the oven is labelled to warn of this and with a little common sense should not pose a hazard... Too soon to assess durability, but hope the product lives up to Panasonic's reputation.

Thanks for your feedback about this Panasonic microwave. Since posting here previously we've spoken to Panasonic about the issues raised here, particularly the high surface temperatures you've reported to us. Panasonic tell us that the surface temperatures the CF778S reaches are to be expected for a microwave cooking food at high temperatures. But we'll keep an eye on this; we carry out thorough safety tests on every microwave we review - if we found one to be dangerous, we would certainly let our members know about this.

If you'd like to discuss the temperature issue or anything else, Panasonic have let me know that their customer care team will be more than happy to talk through your issues - you can reach them on on 0844 844 3868.

Thanks once again for passing on your feedback.
