Sewing machines: How to buy a sewing machine FAQs
How much does a sewing machine cost?
A non-computerised sewing machine will be fine for basic sewing tasks
Prices of basic models have dropped in recent years. An entry-level sewing machine will set you back about £50 to £250. The middle of the range is broad with machines from about £200 up to £850, while top-of-the range electronic machines can cost more than £1,000-£2,000.
Do I really need a computerised sewing machine?
If you plan on doing lots of fancy stitching or embroidery and have the budget, it's worth it. If you just intend to do basic sewing then go for a cheaper, non-computerised sewing machine.
Do I really need a free arm?
Most sewing machines have this feature anyway. It's ideal for difficult-to-sew areas such as sleeves and trouser hems.
Basically they have an extension table which sits around the free arm. It can be removed from the machine, converting it from a flat bed to a free arm.
Can I add features once I've bought a machine?
No, what you buy is what you get so make sure you think carefully about the features you really want. Conversely, don’t spend a fortune on a machine with dozens of gadgets you are never going to use.
You can usually get accessories such as different feet or types of needles for machines from established manufacturers though, which will give a basic machine more flexibility.
If I only want to sew curtains what should I look for?
A basic sewing machine will probably suffice, but make sure it will take the material you intend to use.
If you're only sewing light materials it should be ideal, but if you're planning to use heavier fabrics you need to be looking in the middle range for a machine with a longer stitch length and more robust body. This will cost anywhere between £200 to £850, depending on what extra features you want.
Do I need to buy an overlocker machine?
It really depends on how much sewing you intend to do. If you're planning on making just a few garments at home, the answer is probably no. You can neaten edges by using a zig-zag stitch on your ordinary machine.
If you plan to do a lot of sewing or even set up a small business, an overlocker machine would be a good investment as it gives a professional finish to the seams of garments.
