Steam irons: Compare features & prices Bosch TDA4632 review Back to Results

Bosch claims that the TDA4632 steam iron offers 'high power and great features at a lower price', so we were keen to compare it with other mid-price steam irons - and to see whether it's any better than the Bosch TDA4622, which has less power but is £5 cheaper.

Brilliant as a dry iron, though not tried it as yet with steam
I only purchased this iron from work the other day, after the cable cracked and was sparking on my trusty old Phillips iron I'd had for nearly 15 years.I have to say, that I've now ironed 7 of my work shirts, a pile of t-shirts and 2 tops and it's been a breeze to use. I did wonder with it being a much lighter iron than my previous model how good it would be and certainly I do have to press a little harder, but I think it's brilliant. I can iron a shirt typically a minute faster than I could with my old iron and it smooths away the creases much easier and it doesn't get caught on any small ruckles in the fabric and leave behind any unwanted creases either. This was a bane with my previous iron.As yet, I've not had to use it as a steam iron, so I can't pass any comment on this at present, unlike many of the other reviews. To summarise, as a dry iron I think it's pretty good and very fast to heat up. I shall be monitoring it's performance over the coming months to see if it lives up to be either a Which? Best Buy or a pup as other customers have found.

Mine leaked from day one - but I thought I'd overfilled it so carried on regardless. The controls failed as in other reviews here. Have now sent it back to Amazon after 6 months as I'm fed up with wet hands and dud controls. They didn't argue...I think that it might be a fairly good iron if it had the build quality you should be able to expect from Bosch, but evidently it is a loser in that respect.

The worst iron I have ever had. The ridged handle is uncomfortable to hold. The iron frequently drips and the thermostat control 'button' has fallen off several times. The water filler 'slider' will only partly close with force. Apart from the soleplate I found the build quality very poor and not what you would expect from an iron of this price or make. Wish I had returned mine.

I was disappointed as the steam switch failed as I tried out the calc'n clean function (after the "before first use" steps but before using the iron). It's spring loaded so needs holding in place while carrying out cleaning but after a few presses the spring flipped so that it was sprung towards the cleaning position so could only be used with no steam or the dripping cleaning setting. I used the iron dry and it worked well and the steam shot got the creases out. I'm hoping that I got a rare duff one (though wonder considering the reviews) as I intend swapping this - it was difficult finding any of the best buys locally and I need a new one urgently, can't wait for on-line delivery.

Great iron for easy ironing and smooth clothes
We're sorry to hear that some of you have had problems with this iron. If anyone experiences any of the electrical problems describes you should stop using it immediately and return it to the retailer. Similarly, if you find the iron leaks, doesn't steam or drips water at high heat settings we would advise returning it.

This iron earns a Best Buy award because it produced plenty of steam and smoothed light and heavy fabrics with little effort in our tests. Our expert ironer found that 'even badly creased garments were easily pressed' which is a hallmark of a great iron. It's not as easy to use as some irons - the temperature dial is slim so you may find it hard to grip and it's stiff so you'll have to use some force to turn it. And the maximum water level mark is only on the left-hand side of the tank so you won't always be able to see it, depending on which hand you're holding the iron with. Because of this, the Bosch TDA4632 scores just three stars for convenience and scored lower than other Best Buys in some areas of our testing. But we feel it's still a worthy Best Buy on the strength of its ironing performance.

I cannot understand how this iron gets a best buy rating. I have found the same faults as the other reports above. The steam control is poor, with max. and min settings giving the same amount of steam. It drips water even when set to max. heat setting. The level of water is very hard to see. I would think that anyone with poor eyesight must have problems filling the iron. Cleaning is not satisfactory being more difficult than other irons I have owned. Best buy, not for me.

Mine leaked badly, didn't deal well w heavily creased cottons, and worst of all, a flange broke off the rear portion so that the cable sheath slipped out. This left the rear panel loose so the leak was worse. Not a best buy. Took it back, got my money back

Not worth buying
My new iron kept tripping the mains and so I have had it replaced. The second one is doing the same. If there are no good customer reviews for this iron how is it a best buy?

Electrical connection corrosion. (1.5 years old)
Mine never apparently leaked, and worked great, but it failed a portable appliance test, so i took it apart. I found that there was considerable corrosion around the earth and neutral connections, which are housed inside the iron, virtually underneath the steam buttons. The corrosion was severe enough, to effectively remove the earth connection, and leave the appliance in a dangerous condition. Without testing this appliance, i was blissfully unaware of this danger. It is now destined for the recycling bin.

Think I bought a 'dud'.
I thought this iron would be just what I was looking for. I was so disappointed. I am hoping it was just a 'dud' one because I wasn't impressed. At first it wouldn't steam at all. When it eventually did start steaming the output was poor and after about a minute it made a loud 'tunk' sound and the steam stopped completely for about a minute when after a further 'tunk' the steam started again. I spent most of my time trying to iron with a non steaming steam iron, or pressing the burst of steam to see if I could get the steam going. I wasn't impressed with the soleplate either,it says it is ceramic but, the ceramic soleplates I have had before have been much smoother and easier glide than this one. I was convinced that this simply was not the same iron as in the Best Buy description and must be faulty so I took it back and got my money back. Not sure if I will buy another one, because if it wasn't a 'dud' one, it was the worst ironing experience I have ever had.
