How well the iron ironed shirts, skirts and trousers
Overall Ease of Use
An overall rating for convenience, which includes how easy our testers found the product to store and the instructions to read.
Steam irons: How quickly the iron heats up from cold to be ready to iron on the three-dot heat setting. Steam generators: How quickly the generator heats up from cold to be ready to use (with full steam out-put)
How quickly the iron cools and how easy it is to store
Subjective rating of how noisy the iron is when using continuous steam. The more stars, the quieter it is.
Water tank capacity
If you do lots of ironing in one go, opt for an iron with a larger water tank. Steam generators have a larger tank than steam irons.
An auto shut-off is a safety feature that stops the iron from heating if it hasn't been moved for a period of time - useful if you've ever forgotten to unplug your iron after using it.
Replaceable anti-calcium cartridges
Models with replaceable anti-calcium cartridges are less likely to need you to follow a cleaning regime to descale them, but you will have to purchase replacement cartridges at additional cost to keep the iron in working order.
