The Which? Best Buy award is given to
products with high total test scores that perform consistently well in
our rigorous lab tests and excel in all key areas.
We award the Energy Saver logo to
products that our testing shows are very energy efficient, meaning
they'll cost you less to run.
The Which? Don't Buy logo alerts you
to the products that performed extremely poorly in one or more key
areas of our tests.
Cotton cupboard-dry full load drying time
How quickly the dryer finished this load. Cupboard-dry programs leave clothes completely dry.
Synthetic fabrics drying time
How quickly the dryer finished this load. Synthetics programs are for special fabrics that could be damaged if they get too hot or dry.
For dryers tested after 2012. This assessment considers what state your clothes are left in at the end of the drying cycle. Some dryers may leave clothes damp and in need of more drying. Alternatively, garments could be over-dried, meaning the dryer has been drying for longer than it had to, which is inconvenient for you and pushes up energy costs. It also increases the risk of laundry being damaged, particularly clothes made from synthetic fabrics.
Condensation unit efficiency
Applies to condenser dryers only. We measured how much water from the clothes the tumble driers collected.
Ease of use
Includes the ease of using and programing the dryer, loading the drum, and cleaning the lint filter and condenser unit.
Annual energy costs based on drying 3 full-capacity loads per week
The lowest scorers were fairly loud – the motor was audible, as was the movement of air and the drum, and the noise of falling linen was quite forceful.
We research the reliability of tumble dryers and give them excellent, good, satisfactory, poor or very poor ratings.
Tumble dryer type
Vented dryers expel damp air through a hose, condenser dryers collect moisture in a reservoir. For more information on all the different types of dryer, see 'How to buy the best dryer'.
Integrated and compact options
The majority of tumble dryers on the market will be full sized and freestanding. But some models are integrated rather than freestanding - so can be built 'into' a kitchen. Compact models are physically smaller. Both types are limited in number.
Capacity of dryer (kg)
The maximum dry weight of washing that can be dried by the machine.
EU energy label
Gas models don't have an energy label so are shown as n/a in this filter
Annual energy costs (£)
Annual energy costs based on drying 3 full-capacity loads per week. At a unit rate of 15.5p per kWh
Whether the dryer uses a sensor to tell when clothes are dry
Whether starting the dryer can be delayed - useful if you want to take advantage of cheap-rate electricity. If the machine will be turned on while unattended, make sure a smoke alarm is fitted nearby.
