The upright Dyson DC24 Ball Multi Floor vacuum cleaner is a bagless vac which can be emptied one-handed using the push-button release mechanism. So it'll save you money on replacement bags - but does this vacuum compare well to other upright cleaners in our tests?

I'd like to see him rinsing the ball filter ten times under the cold tap, summer and winter months, anywhere north of Birmingham. Many customers, as soon as they have bought it, say how much more it picks up than their previous cleaners. What they are seeing is fibres scratched out from the pile where the previous machine had left them matted in as part of the thickness of the carpet. And it keeps on scratching every time because the default setting is beater-on - it's quite a fight to persuade it to respond to the beater-off button - so it's cutting away a few more fibres every time. For bigger rooms I use a Panasonic bagless which has "beater on" as the second switch setting. The Panasonic's suction is powerful enough for regular work and I can switch the beater on topically where I see a need. And Panasonic does not dictate that I should get frostbite. Pros: Cons:

Light machine but robust-handy for stairs and switching from carpet to hard floors a cinch. OK-washing filters a chore but at least both are accessible, not like its 'copyists' (patent has run out). Length of cable is probably a health and safety issue-daughter has a DC01 and wind spring unreliable. Expect my DC24 to last me my lifetime! Extremely pleased. Pros: Cons:

Under warranty and is replaced each time, but very annoying when it burns out mid way through vacuuming the house.Has put me off upright Dysons forever. Pros: Cons:

It's lightweight, very manoeuvrable, picks up well (including long haired cat fur) and is easy to empty, which needs doing more often than a larger machine. The hose could be longer, and it's a bit sensitive when long strands get caught around the brush, but even that is relatively easy to sort. A godsend for anyone who trembles at the prospect of carting a hoover upstairs, knocking paint off the skirting boards whilst their arm slowly deadens. Pros: Cons:

I have been impressed by how much dust the machine picks up, but it is tricky to empty the dust collecter and to clean the filter in the ball. Taking the ball apart to get at the filter is very trickly but we do it every month (as recommended by the manual) to ensure the vacuum continues to clean well, which it does. Pros: Cons:

Found it a bit difficult to understand the pictorial instructions and had to go back to the store to check out I was assembling it and using it correctly - rather tedious. Am pleased with it but would like the hose to be a bit longer and more flexible for doing stairs - or else another extension piece Pros: Cons:

This is a very good performer and over time has proved to be very good value for money. Also, of course it is very light - much easier to get up those stairs and the ball is magic - so much easier to get around. If there is a downside, but minor, the power cable is on the short side, and maybe the extension hose is also a bit short (extension available). After nearly 2 years of hard working - this is the best Vacuum Cleaner (including previous Dyson)we have ever had! Pros: Cons:

However, we were rather anoyed that Dyson have changed their fittings since we purchased our first machine so the 'extra' tools that we bought (at some considerable expense) don't fit! The inclusion of a simple plasic adaptor would have overcome this - but I guess they want to make more money out of you by getting you to go and buy a load more tools. It's a shame that the only tool that does come with the machine is of limited use, also, it fills up very quickly so no good for a big house. Itis lighter and easier to move about but it doesn't pick up so well as the old one and the lead and hose are too short. I have to lift whole machine off the floor to get the cobwebs off the ceiling. It also seems quite delicate so I am very gentle when disconnecting container etc. That being said, I've had it about 5 years and it's still fine. When this one goes, I will definitely buy another dyson, but not this model.
