Washer-dryer reviews: Reliability

Washer-dryers reliability

Every year we survey thousands of Which? members about their home appliances to find out which brands are the most reliable. This year, we've compiled the views of more than 400 members about their washer-dryers to bring you reliability ratings for big-name washer-dryer brands.

We asked Which? members about any problems they'd had with their washer-dryers. We’ve heard about the minor niggles, such as blocked filter, as well as major problems that will stop you from washing and drying your clothes, including complete programme failures.

Washer-dryers have the lowest reliability scores of all of the large kitchen appliances we've looked at. Because they're two machines-in-one, there's more that can go wrong. But the highest scoring brand of washer-dryer has a satisfactory reliability score of 80%. But washer-dryers at the other end of the reliability table only score a poor 52% for reliability. Use our table below to discover the most reliable brands that should develop fewer faults than their rivals.

Brands including AEG/AEG-Electrolux, Bosch, Hotpoint, John Lewis and Zanussi/Zanussi-Electrolux are featured in our reliability table.

Only logged-in Which? members can view full scores in our washer-dryer reliability table below. If you're not already a member, you can sign up to try out full access for one month, for just £1.

Zanussi/Zanussi-Electrolux are a popular washer-dryer purchase – 22% of respondents to our survey own a Zanussi or Zanussi-Electrolux washer-dryer. 18% own a Hotpoint and 16% own an AEG or AEG-Electrolux washer-dryer.

Reliability and Best Buys

Washer-dryers tend to be less reliable than other appliances so the reliability rating is a key part of the decisions we make about which models deserve Best Buy status.

So a washer dryer can qualify as a Best Buy only if the brand has scored at least three out of five stars for reliability, based on our survey of owners, or if the model has a free 5-year warranty.
