Save hundreds on your next laptop by buying a refurbished or clearance model

You can bag yourself a bargain by buying refurbished products instead of brand-new items.

Refurbished products are items that have been returned to the manufacturer and resold at a sizeable discount.

Often, they are returned either unused or barely used by the previous owner. They are always checked for defects before being resold.

Here, we round up the best places to find refurbished tech products and cheap kitchen appliances.

For links to all the sites where you can buy these products, see 'Useful links' at the end of the page.

Graded items may have been returned, are ex-display or have been cancelled. All products are tested and repaired before being sold. All items are in working order but have cosmetic flaws. eBay has a number of online stores selling graded products at discounted prices and these include:

  • Graded Electricals Direct - cheap graded irons and juicers from a variety of brands, including Vax, Breville and Electrolux. All products come with a 12-month guarantee.
  • Ultimate Graded Appliances - graded and brand new end-of-line Hotpoint, Indesit and Cannon kitchen appliances, including cheap ovens and freezers. All appliances are sold with a full 12 months' warranty. There may be some minor blemishes that are normally limited to the sides and rear of the appliances.

You can also search for graded products on eBay. Remember to add the type of item you are looking for, such as 'graded washing machines'. This tends to get better results than just searching 'graded'.

The state of the item, such as 'manufacturer refurbished', is listed along with faults or details of the condition.

How to find the best Amazon deals

There are plenty of discounts available on Amazon, but they can be difficult to find

Amazon often offers up to 90% reductions on tech products and kitchen gadgets among other items, but tracking down the best deals on Amazon's massive website can be tricky.

The best way to find the cheapest appliance deals is to select the department you want, eg 'kitchen and home', then the sub-category, such as 'kitchen and dining'. Sorting by popularity will generally allow you to see the best deals first. If you know the type of appliance or specific model you want, it's even easier to see what deals are available.

Amazon also offers cheap deals on items that have been returned, warehouse-damaged or refurbished - these can't be sold as new. The items are inspected, cleaned and repaired (if necessary) before being sold at discount prices. You can find them in the 'warehouse deals' section of the Amazon website.
