Tax returns Giving your tax refund to charity

If you choose, you can donate some or all of your tax refund directly to charity

If you’re due a tax refund, you might decide to give some of the cash to charity. HMRC runs a scheme known as Self Assessment Giving or SA Donate, which you can use to give directly to the good cause of your choice. You can also claim Gift Aid on the donation.

To give all or part of your tax rebate to charity, follow these steps:

  • Visit HMRC’s charity page to choose a charity to give to and find out its Charity Code (you’ll need this for your tax return);
  • Fill in the form SA100 Charity, which should be included with your tax return pack or can be downloaded from HMRC's website;
  • You don’t need to give all your tax repayment to charity – you can specify either the whole balance or a specific maximum amount.
  • For more details visit HMRC's charity pages.
