Easyjet is to charge passengers £10 if they want to check in more than one bag.

The no-frills airline announced that the new charge - which is cut to £5 if you pay online - was necessary because of the pressures caused by the current security crackdown.

It claims the move will encourage people to take less luggage and clear extra security checks faster.

The charge will apply to bookings made from 1 September. There will be no change to the 20kg allowance or the excess baggage charge of £5 per kilo.

Andy Harrison, chief executive of Easyjet, said: ‘We are now taking action to adapt our policies to the new security measures in a way which will benefit our passengers. It is simply common sense that people need to think a little more carefully about how much luggage they take and that is what these changes are designed to do.’
