The yo-yo syringe is dangerous

Parents have been warned to look out for an inflatable yo-yo that could maim or even kill a child.

Safety chiefs fear kids could be speared by an inch-long needle and syringe used to inflate the Chinese-made Pump-It-Up Air Yo-Yo.

The potentially lethal toy was discovered on sale in two Northampton stores. Local trading standards officers (TSOs) have now seized these and about 30 others. Northamptonshire TSOs are now investigating how many more are on sale in the UK.

The yo-yos, which are on a length of elastic, are about the size of a golf ball.

Needle danger

Mike Chambers, Principal TSO for Northamptonshire, said: ‘In the meantime it is vital that we warn children and parents to beware of these toys and to notify trading standards if they see them on sale anywhere.

‘There is a very real danger that the needle could stick into a child and, as it would not be sterile, the resulting injury could become infected.

‘It could be even more dangerous – even fatal – if the needle was used to inject air into a child’s bloodstream.  And, on top of that, there is a danger that the plastic pump can be easily grasped and used as a weapon.’

Parents should contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or their local trading standards service if they come across the yo-yos.
