Freeview is preparing to launch a digital television recorder to rival BSkyB’s Sky Plus set-top box.
Playback will let viewers record, pause and rewind live TV and Freeview expects to sell more than 10 million of the recorders by 2010.
Freeview will not make the recorders – which will cost around £150 - but will award the Playback label to manufacturers.
Last November it announced that six major manufacturers – Alba, Humax, Sagem, Sharp, Sony, and Tvonics – had signed up to produce Freeview Playback-branded digital TV recorders.
Freeview, which is operated by a consortium that includes BBC and Channel 4, says the Playback recorders will be available from next month.
Freeview's General Manager, Cary Wakefield, said: ‘It's the next chapter of the Freeview story. We will be very surprised if Freeview Playback doesn't feature in the top 10 Christmas gifts.'
