A low-cost Canadian airline has launched a daily flight from Gatwick to New York’s JFK International Airport.
Zoom is offering one-way fares of £100 on its 266-seat Boeing 767-300s.
Slightly larger ‘premium economy’ seats can be booked for an additional £90 each way.
We compared prices on a non-stop flight to New York in September and found a seat for £257.75 – 50 per cent cheaper than BA and nearly £100 off Continental and Delta airline prices.
Which? travel expert Bob Tolliday said: ‘These are fares that passengers can’t ignore. This should be the start of a price war on transatlantic routes and a boom in air travel to the USA.’
Zoom does not require passengers to buy a round-trip ticket or stay over on a Saturday night, both typical requirements for a cheaper flight on most airlines.
Zoom, based in Ottawa and at Gatwick, already operates 10 to 12 daily flights between Canada and the UK.
The New York flights will leave London Gatwick every lunchtime, arriving into JFK in the early afternoon. Return flights will leave New York in the early evening, landing at London Gatwick at around 6am the following morning.
