Tesco offers bag-free deliverySupermarkets hails move as UK first
12 June 2007
UK customers of a major supermarket chain are being offered the option of a bag-free delivery in the battle to protect the environment.
Tesco.com said the move is a UK supermarket first and the company is responding to customers' concerns about the number of bags used in home delivery.
Shoppers can now choose to have their groceries delivered without bags after making an order online.
Customers who select the delivery without bags option will have their goods delivered in stackable green trays.
The supermarket said bagless deliveries are just one of a series of initiatives it is putting in place with the aim of reducing the number of carrier bags used by the nation by one billion within the next year.
Laura Wade-Gery, Chief Executive of Tesco.com, said: ‘Delivery without bags is both a win for our customers and the environment. The initiative is part of the Tesco Community Plan to minimise our impact on the environment and empowers our customers to make a positive environmental choice.
‘Our dotcom operation in the Republic of Ireland has been delivering successfully in this way for over two years.
‘Following extensive trials in the UK and positive customer feedback we have made the decision to roll out the scheme across the whole of the UK.’
