A UK computer chain is launching in-store areas dedicated to robots.
PC World will sell a dozen different models when it launches the project this autumn.
A 'spy robot' called the Spykee which records and takes snapshots of its surroundings is among the initial range.
And an R2D2 droid which plays DVDs, computer games, CDs and music downloads will go on sale priced at around £2,000.
PC World MD Keith Jones predicted robots would become a mass-market phenomenon.
'We are convinced that robotics will play an increasingly important role in the field of consumer technology in the years ahead and the time is right for us to enter this developing market,' he said.
Prices will range from under £200 for the Spykee to around £2,000 for the most expensive models.
PC World may also put a 'companion' robot for children on sale.
