Adults buying 'posh squash'Waitrose reporting sales surge

Posh squash for adults is enjoying a sales upturn, a retailer said today.

Elderflower, ginger and other flavoured cordials are popular with drivers who can't drink and with gym-goers in need of refreshment, according to Waitrose.

The chain's sales of adult squash drinks rose by 17 per cent in the past year, outstripping the growth levels for children's squashes.

Many of the cordials are made in the UK by British firms and have a high fruit content.

Waitrose cordial buyer James Hodgson said shoppers also used the flavoured drinks as cocktail mixers and dessert flavourings.

'Cordials have really grown up with the adult palate in mind - gone are the days when they were just kids' stuff,' he said.

Elderflower is the best-selling flavour of adult squash at Waitrose.
