Manufacturer Mars said "an isolated incident" on the production line at its factory in Slough, Berkshire, was to blame for the contamination.

The affected batches are: Milk Chocolate Maltesers in bags, pouches, boxes, PickNMix and pots with best before dates between 16.12.07 and 06.01.08 and Revels in bags, pouches and pots with best before dates between 16.12.07 and 13.01.08.

Full refund

Customers were asked to return packs with these best before dates for a full refund including postage.

The spokeswoman added: 'Maltesers and Revels are committed to manufacturing products of the highest safety and quality and apologise for any inconvenience caused.'
