Parasites were found in a school dinner served to pupils.

Suffolk County Council said the discovery was made in a rice dish at Chalkstone Middle School, in Haverhill, Suffolk, on October 9.

A spokesman for the authority said: 'Rice parasites were found in rice served to pupils. A child saw something on the plate and brought it to the attention of staff.

'The meal option was immediately withdrawn and a cold lunch provided instead.'

He said such incidents were 'extremely rare' and any health risk was negligible.

A spokeswoman for Forest Heath District Council, which is leading an investigation into the incident, said the maggot-like parasites were found in brown rice.
