Tesco ups drive to recycle mobile phonesChain says millions of handsets are ditched

Tesco has launched a mobile phone recycling scheme after its research found that millions of handsets are discarded each year.
The supermarket chain says a recent Tesco Mobile survey found that almost 11 million people expect to get a new handset over Christmas.
But 20% of these people will simply throw away the old mobile handset, even if they still work.
Tesco Mobile Recycle allows people to recycle any working mobile phone online and earn recycling rewards.
Andy Dewhurst, chief executive of Tesco Mobile, said: ‘We've decided to take positive steps in response to these findings and have recently launched an online mobile recycling service.
‘We also re-launched our recycling envelopes in stores with the aim of recycling 1 million mobile phones in the next year alone, helping to reduce the number of handsets that go on the scrap heap and making it even easier for our customers to recycle easily.’
Under the recycling scheme, if you're a Tesco Mobile customer you'll get up to £70 worth of Tesco Mobile airtime or the equivalent in Tesco gift vouchers if you're with another network.
Once you visit the website you can select the handset you'd like to recycle and then see what rewards it would get.
You're then given a postage-paid envelope and will receive the reward once Tesco Mobile has received and checked the mobile phone.
