The Gordon Ramsay effect has already hit stores ahead of his live televised 'cookalong' a retailer has said.

Frozen scallop sales have soared by 600% at Waitrose in the past fortnight.

The food chain is putting the huge year-on-year increase down to the seafood's inclusion in a recipe for tonight's show.

TV show

The chef will start his Gordon Ramsay Cookalong Live by making pan-roasted scallops with tomato and herb salsa.

The recipe, published online on January 9, includes 12 scallops ‘hand dived if you can get them’.

Waitrose frozen food buyer Sally Brooks said: ‘With the programme's producers encouraging customers to cook along from home, it certainly appears that people aren't taking any chances and are ensuring that their fridges and freezers are stocked up.’

Steak and chips

Ramsay will also prepare steak and chips then chocolate mousse during the live Channel 4 show.

Commenting on the Waitrose scallop sales, the Michelin-starred celebrity chef said: ‘That's great news. A lot of people are somewhat intimidated by them. But they're very good for you.’

Waitrose expects its fish counters to be busy today, ahead of the show.
