Bloggers rush for .me domain nameExperts predict major interest in new web address
18 July 2008
Online bloggers can now personalise their own web pages after the .me internet domain address was launched yesterday afternoon.
Web experts predicted a huge interest in the domain name and expect sales to rival the launch of the .eu address.
Businesses are also set to snap up the .me address, particularly as it gives them the ability to concoct addresses such as date.me and marry.me.
Mark Boost, who is managing director of UK domain registration company LCN.Com, said: ‘The possibilities for .me as a domain name are endless.
‘Individuals who are looking to register .me domain names to secure their own personal email address, such as firstname.lastname@example.org will now be able to do so.
‘Businesses will be quick to snap up those of real commercial value, but we're also anticipating a huge interest from bloggers who want to personalise their websites and make a real statement.’
The .me county code was initially assigned to Montenegro after it gained its independence in June 2006.
But the Montenegro government released it due to the potential interest in the domain name across the world.
'While most of the obvious names such as find.me and love.me have already been snapped up, the .me domain is still a fun way to personalise your own web and email address,' says Which? technology editor Matthew Bath. 'Prices do vary between companies offering domain names, so it's worth shopping around for the best deal, but it's a good opportunity to bag a domain name that is more personal.'
