BT has launched a new service which promises to speed up your broadband or give your money back.

The £90 service involves an engineer coming around to your home and looking at ways to improve the performance of both your computer and your internet connection.

The service is available to anyone who has a BT landline, regardless of who provides their internet.

Refund

BT says that if broadband speed hasn't increased by at least 0.5Mbps within a week, it will refund the £90 charge to your next phone bill.

Initially, BT will test your existing broadband speed over the phone to see if a home visit can help.

If it can, one of its engineers will look at ways to optimise your home computer, internal wiring and home networks.

Landline test

Head of BT’s Home IT Support service, Taza Mohammedbhai, said: ‘Based on our research we are confident that up to 60% of customers could benefit from the ‘Broadband Accelerator’ service.’

Which? technology editor Matthew Bath said: ‘It's good that BT has highlighted the fact that some good PC housekeeping can speed up your broadband speeds, and that it's helping consumers fix practical speed problems.

‘But, it does seem a little steeply priced, considering that with a bit of knowledge, every PC owner could do similar fixes themselves.

'We'll be looking at the BT Accelerator service in detail shortly.’
