The latest version of the popular Firefox browser now holds the world record for the largest number of software downloads in 24 hours.

Software company Mozilla was hoping for around 5 million downloads when it launched its Firefox 3 browser last month.

The record attempt caused the Mozilla website to crash for a several hours but, despite this, more than 8 million people still managed to download the browser.

Best Buy

Firefox 3, which is free to download, can be used on a Mac or a PC and a test version was recently named a Best Buy by Which? Computing.

Mozilla says that Firefox 3 includes 15,000 improvements on the previous version and is two to three times faster.

Other improvements to the browser include a ‘smart’ location bar and malware protection.

Malware

Mozilla says the location bar – which it calls the Awesome Bar – learns as you use it, adapts to your preferences and offers better-fitting matches over time.

The firm says the new browser uses less memory while it’s running, and new malware and phishing protection helps protect you from viruses, worms, trojans and spyware.
