Land Rover does not have a reputation for building environmentally friendly vehicles. But, as this new Freelander TD4_e shows, it is trying to improve its eco credentials.
Debuting at the Paris Motor Show, the Freelander TD4_e combines the off-roader’s regular diesel engine with a stop-start system.
This automatically switches the engine off whenever the car is at a standstill in neutral with the clutch released, and automatically restarts it again as soon as the clutch is depressed.
According to standard EU testing, this improves the Freelander diesel’s fuel economy from 37.7mpg combined to 41.3mpg – an 8% boost – while CO2 emissions are reduced from 194g/km to 179g/km.
But Land Rover claims you can expect fuel economy to increase nearly 20% in heavy traffic.
Specific engineering improvements – including a bigger starter-motor, new battery-monitoring systems, and an auxiliary water pump – mean the Freelander otherwise operates as usual.
The TD4_e also incorporates a gearshift indicator, and low-rolling resistance tyres, helping it become Land Rover’s most efficient model ever.
The system will become standard equipment on all manual TD4 Freelanders from mid-2009.
