We were surprised to discover UK Car Discount shifting 2.0-litre turbodiesels for a huge £8,225 less than list. This deal is on sporty Dynamique S five-doors, available unregistered (new) in various colours for £14,200.

Since the cars are from stock you can’t pick your own options, but they do already include satnav, Bluetooth, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Best Buy Verso savings

The Toyota Verso isn’t an especially inspiring people carrier, but it is reliable.

Carfile will sell you a new one in good value SR trim with powerful 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine for £15,444 - £3,379 less than list; add an extra £315 if you want metallic paint.

Pre-facelift Octavia bargains

The Skoda Octavia is about to receive a comprehensive facelift, and you can only get a new one from stock until the revised version launches in January.

So you might find it’s worth checking the used market to get the specification you’re after and a decent deal.

For example, All Approved Cars is listing a 2.0-litre turbodiesel estate in mid-spec Ambiente trim with metallic paint for £13,495; first registered in March 2008, it’s covered just 3,500 miles since then. Brand new, this car costs £17,480.

End-of-line Mazda 3

Finally, the Mazda3 is about to be replaced. The saloon is a slow seller in the UK. Still, £8,049 for a 3,500-mile, 2008-registered 1.6 petrol TS2 seems like an attractive deal.
