Stores cut prices to lure shoppers

John Lewis and Marks & Spencer lead the way for home and garden products

Retailers across the high street are slashing prices in an effort to entice consumers to part with their cash in the run-up to Christmas.

Supermarkets Tesco and Sainsbury’s have announced they will implement the planned VAT cut three days early on a range of goods in an effort to help families save on Christmas shopping bills.

Tesco also plans to reduce prices by up to 50% on 1,000 lines including digital cameras and digital music players.

High street bargains

High street rivals are responding with longer opening hours and further pre-Christmas ‘guerrilla’ sales.

Department stores getting in on the act include Beales, Selfridges and House of Fraser – with the latter cutting prices by up to 40% in a two-day promotion.

Marks & Spencer and Debenhams are planning to repeat last week’s flash sales, while BHS and other Arcadia group shops including Burton, Evans and Dorothy Perkins are also preparing to make reductions, according to the Daily Mail newspaper.

Price cuts

Elsewhere on the high street, Argos is giving away a £5 gift voucher with each £50 spend and a £10 gift voucher with a £100 spend.

Superdrug is hoping to boost perfume sales by reducing many lines by up to 60%. Rival Boots has reduced selected perfumes and electrical items by up to 50%.

Online discounts

Online retailers are also cutting prices in a bid to entice Christmas shoppers to part with their cash.

Amazon is currently discounting as part of its 12 days of Christmas sale, while Play is offering promotions of up to 75% off in a pre-Christmas round of reductions.
