Passengers due to fly from Stansted airport are advised to check with their airline before travelling after several flights were cancelled following protests by environmental campaigners.

The cancellation of 56 flights and the delay of dozens more have left hundreds of passengers facing long queues at check-in desks and security points throughout the airport.   

Stansted runway closed

Despite the runway opening shortly after 8am this morning, airport operator BAA warned passengers to expect long delays. BAA said the runway at Stansted had been closed for ‘safety and security reasons’ and advised passengers to contact their airlines directly’ before leaving home. It is unsure how long it will be before normal service is resumed.

Stansted protest

The protest began at around 3am this morning after more than 50 climate change activists broke into the airport and occupied a runway that had been closed for maintenance. The activists chained themselves together in protest against the government’s decision to allow a second runway at Stansted..Police said 29 people had been arrested.
