BMW Z4

Styling revisions for Z4

BMW has announced the details of its all-new Z4 sports car, which features a two-piece folding hardtop for the first time. The car also represents the BMW debut of new suspension technology.

‘Dynamic Drive Control’ is standard – which, depending on model, gives the driver control over things such as throttle response, steering weight, and gearshift time – and the Z4 will also become the first BMW available with ‘Adaptive M Suspension’.

This is a three-setting electronically damped suspension system, allowing the driver to select a more comfortable or sporty driving experience as they prefer.

New Z4 to ride better

The original Z4 was always criticised for its harsh ride quality, so buyers who specify this will no doubt be glad to hear that only the most aggressive ‘Sport+’ setting compares to the previous version’s standard ride comfort, making every other mode more compliant.

Stylish new Z4 interior

As a dedicated performance car, BMW is thus far only confirming petrol engines for the Z4 – 2.5-litre, 3.0-litre, and 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight six engines, badged sDrive23i, sDrive30i and sDrive35i respectively.

These should offer tremendous performance, but also all claim to top 31mpg combined, and come loaded with BMW's fuel-saving EfficientDynamics technology.

Gearbox options

A conventional automatic will be offered alongside the standard six-speed manual on the sDrive30i, while BMW’s new seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox will be available on the sDrive35i, complete with steering wheel-mounted paddleshifters.

BMW’s iDrive infotainment system will also be offered on a Z4 for the first-time, including a new 12Gb hard disc option.

The new Z4 is bigger than the outgoing model, offering increased passenger space and luggage room – including a new storage area behind the seats, and a load-through option from the boot.

Visibility is also improved – apparently by 40% at the sides, and 52% at the rear.

Prices for the all-new BMW Z4 will be announced in 2009, and we expect the car to be on sale early in the year.
