Sat nav named must-have Christmas gift for driversMotoring gadget helped to drive high-street sales
27 December 2008
Sat nav was named the must-have Christmas gift for drivers in a poll of AA members.
Two-fifths of those surveyed by the motoring group already own a sat nav, and 54% of these said it is the best device they have ever had in their cars.
Male drivers are much more likely to own a sat nav, with almost half (47%) now using one, compared with just 30% of women. Sat navs are most popular with drivers aged between 18 and 24, 43% of whom own one.
Sat nav safety
AA president Edmund King said sat navs are brilliant devices – if used safely.
‘A majority of those that have them think they are the best in-car device ever,’ he said. ‘These devices can enhance safety by reassuring drivers they are on the right route. Often roads are poorly signed, so the sat nav helps as a guide.'
Earlier this month high street retailer John Lewis reported a record week for sales of electronics, with sat navs among the top-selling products.
