06 January 2009

Tesco announced today that it is to cut the price of 3,000 basic foods including Weetabix and tea bags.

The reductions will be either special offers or long-term price reductions. Special offers will include Müller Light yoghurts, Weetabix cereal and own-brand tea bags and orange juice.

Tesco is also planning to launch an advertising campaign tomorrow comparing the cost of shopping at Tesco with its competitors.

Supermarket price war

Tesco's move follows Asda announcement that it will be cutting the price of thousands of products this month. Asda will be selling 100 frozen food products and 200 health and beauty products for £1.

In turn Sainsbury's will increase the number of products in its basic range by 600. The supermarket said that more than half of these would be less than £1.
