Sony Ericsson today announced the Sony Ericsson Idou 3G mobile phone featuring a 12.1Mp camera sensor.
The mobile phone is due for launch in the second half of 2009, although the name is expected to change before then.
The 3G Idou features Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS and a 3.5 inch touchscreen, with an aspect ratio of 16:9. The feature that has caused a stir at this week’s Mobile World Congress is the mobile phone’s 12.1Mp camera sensor.
The highest resolution currently available on a camera phone is 8Mp. This degree of resolution is on Samsung’s Innov8 and Pixon, the LG Renoir and the LG KC780, as well as the Sony Ericsson C905. Samsung has been reported to be developing the technology to include a 12Mp sensor on a handset, but Sony Ericsson has stolen the limelight with this announcement.
Ben Stevens, Which? researcher, said: ‘It is likely that there will be other 12Mp phones on the market before the Idou is launched, but this is the first model to be officially confirmed. We can expect to hear many more announcements this week as the Mobile World Congress continues, including confirmation of several new 8Mp phones, such as the Samsung Memoir and the Ultra Touch.’
Sony Ericsson described the Idou as ‘encapsulating the future of mobile entertainment in the palm of your hand delivering visual communication like never before’. A website to celebrate the announcement of the Sony Ericsson Idou has been set up.
