Toshiba unveils the TG01 smartphonePowered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 1GHz platform
04 February 2009
Toshiba has unveiled the Toshiba TG01 smartphone. This high-end mobile phone won't be launched until this summer, but the impressive specifications suggest that it may be a true rival to the Apple iPhone.
Toshiba hasn't yet hinted at a price for the TG01, although more information is expected to be announced at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona later this month.
One of the most notable features of the Toshiba TG01 is the fact that it's powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform, which, according to Toshiba, will provide up to 1GHz of processing power and make the TG01 the most powerful phone of this class.
4.1 inch screen and 3.2Mp camera
The device features a 4.1 inch screen, which hosts an intelligent backlighting system similar to the technology used on Toshiba Regza televisions. The primary function of this technology is to adjust the screen's brightness to best suit the ambient light conditions, but it has also proved to be a successful energy saving feature on many televisions.
Guy Widdowson, senior business researcher at Which?, said: 'There have been many phones launched recently that have been billed as the iPhone killer, including the Samsung Omnia and the T-Mobile G1. The specifications of the TG01 outclass the iPhone in many respects, but the proof will be in the pudding; we can expect to see a lot more mobile phones launched between now and the summer and it wouldn't surprise me if this list included a new launch by Apple.'
