Styled a little like a coupé, the Cruze is shaping up to be Chevrolet’s most mainstream contender yet. The interior offers greater quality, and standard equipment is comprehensive.

There are three trim levels: S, LS, and LT. Even the entry level S includes remote locking, follow-me-home lighting, stability control, six airbags, front electric windows, and a good range of adjustment for the driving position. There is also an S A/C model, which includes air conditioning.

Upgrade to LS, and you get air con as standard, 16-inch alloys, front fogs, rear parking sensors and some extra chrome. LT adds cruise control, climate control, anti-dazzle rearview mirror, rear electric windows, 17-inch alloys, even more chrome, and a better stereo.

There are four engines spread throughout the range, 1.6- and 1.8-litre petrols, plus two 2.0-litre turbodiesels, offering as much as 148bhp. An automatic gearbox is optional on the petrols.

Sensibly, Chevrolet has priced the Cruze very aggressively. The entry level 1.6 S starts at £11,545. LS is expected to be the biggest seller, and is available from £12,595, also for a 1.6. The  LT comes as 1.8 or diesel only, and is priced from £13,595.

The Chevrolet Cruze goes on sale in July.
