Ford unveiled a stunning concept car at the Geneva Motor Show, which is being described as a vision for the next generation of compact ‘multi-activity vehicles’.
The Ford iosis Max features unusual exterior features like rear sliding side doors and a bootlid that seems to float above the car when opened. But the most important news is under this vehicle’s bold bodywork.
It’s fitted with a 1.6-litre 180PS Ford EcoBoost engine that brings turbocharging and direct injection technology to the petrol powerplant. It claims to reduce fuel consumption and C02 emissions and will be introduced to production models in Europe next year.
Another new innovation that will appear in production cars from 2010 is the new Ford Auto-Start-Stop system that cuts off power during idling to save fuel and reduce emissions.
This is allied to a smart regenerative charging system that increases alternator output when the vehicle brakes or decelerates, producing kinetic energy that is converted into electric energy without fuel, further enhancing economy.
Ford says its EcoBoost technology is a more affordable solution than equivalent hybrid or diesel engine designs as it builds on existing petrol technology to produce . It states that its simulations suggest that the iosis could achieve a C02 figure of 125g/km.
