The brand new Volkswagen Golf GTI is certain to be one of the hot motoring properties of 2009. It’s a performance icon, and the was a massive success.

The UK prices for the new Golf GTI were only announced this week, ahead of its arrival in May, and in spite of the recession we fully expect there to be substantial demand.

But maybe we’re wrong: remarkably Carfile is already offering £1,000 off brand-new GTI factory orders. That means the three-door manual version could be yours for £21,410 instead of £22,410. We’re gob-smacked to see a discount on this new Golf GTI so soon.

It’s seven-seat ahoy at Drive the Deal. Choose an unregistered Ford Galaxy Ghia with 2.0-litre ‘TDCi’ turbodiesel for £18,550 instead of £27,090, or an unregistered Vauxhall Zafira Breeze special edition with 1.9 ‘CDTi’ turbodiesel for £12,450 instead of £19,710.

Those are discounts of £8,540 (31.5%) and £6,900 (36%), respectively. Act fast if you fancy the Vauxhall – there’s only one available.

It turns out you can get an 08-plate 120d from a BMW dealer for just £18,995. Take Westerly Barnstaple, for example, which has just such a car, in SE specification and with a tiny 5,075 miles on the clock.

Brand new the list price is £23,290 – so that’s a saving of £4,295 on a 175hp BMW that’s officially capable of 58.9mpg.
