Samsung has introduced the NX series of hybrid digital cameras. The Samsung NX is about the size of a typical bridge camera, yet has a larger sensor, more like the ones found on a digital SLR, which should enhance picture quality.

PMA digital camera show

The NX series was announced this week at the PMA (Photo Marketing Association) show in Las Vegas, and we expect to see the range launched in the UK in the second half of 2009.

Sensor size is one of the major contributing factors to good image quality from a digital camera, and is one of the reasons why digital SLRs are capable of taking better pictures than compact cameras.

APS-C sensor

The Samsung NX series features an APS-C sized sensor making it more akin to a digital SLR; however, Samsung has fitted the NX series with electronic viewfinders, meaning that the camera's body can be manufactured on a smaller scale than a digital SLR.

Samsung is confident that this new breed of camera will be very popular due to its compact form, yet great image quality. Sang-jin Park, CEO of Samsung Digital Imaging Company, said: 'We estimate that the hybrid digital camera market will be over 20% of the global digital still camera market by 2012.'

Digital camera reviews

Richard Parris, Which? digital camera expert, said: 'The poor low light performance of compact cameras caused by their smaller image sensors may increasingly become a thing of the past. We'll be keeping a close eye on these emerging hybrid models to see if they can really produce DSLR quality pictures'.
