Sony has announced the Cyber-shot HX1, a high-speed camera with a 20x optical zoom and HD video mode.
The HX1 will be launched in April this year, although Sony is yet to confirm a price. The camera features Sony’s Exmor CMOS sensor, which was originally designed for the Sony Alpha digital SLRs.
Sony claims that the camera is able to capture ten shots per second at its full 9.1Mp of resolution. The ISO can be set to a maximum sensitivity of 3,200, and the three-inch LCD can be tilted to aid the composition of photos when the camera’s held above or below head level.
The HX1 is Sony’s first compact camera to feature a high definition video recording mode. It also features a new processing trick called ‘Sweep Panorama’. This, according to Sony, allows the user to capture a series of rapid shots by holding down the shutter and fluidly sweeping the arm across the landscape. The Bionz processor then stitches the images together to create a single, extra-wide image.
High definition video on cameras
Richard Parris, Which? camera expert, said: ‘The trend for HD video recording in digital cameras is growing apace, but we’re still yet to see a model that can match up to the performance of a dedicated digital camcorder. We’ll be keen to test the HX1 as soon as it’s available.’
