Micro-blogging social networking website Twitter has entered the top 100 most visited websites for the first time, according to internet monitoring company Hitwise UK.

UK traffic to Twitter has trebled in 2009 and in the week ending 7 February 2009 Twitter ranked 91st across all categories of websites. It had more visitors than online heavyweights such as Expedia UK, Gumtree, easyJet, Digital Spy and MoneySupermarket.

Twitter use on the up

Twitter has benefited from a number of celebrity members including Jonathan Ross, Stephen Fry, Russell Brand and Barack Obama.

User traffic to Twitter has increased 27 fold over the last year - but as Hitwise only measures traffic to the Twitter website, people accessing Twitter using mobile phones and third party applications (such as Twitterrific, Twitterfeed and Tweetdeck) are not counted so the real number may be much higher.

Like rival Facebook, Twitter has a variety of accompanying sites and applications. One of the most popular is Twitpic, which enables users to upload photos to their Twitter profiles.

Twitpic ranked seventh in Hitwise's 'Entertainment - Photography' category for the week ending 7 February 2009, up from 26th a month ago. Twitpic is still small in comparison to established photo sharing sites Flickr and Photobucket, but is growing rapidly. UK Internet traffic to the Twitpic has increased more than five fold already this year.
