The new Ford Fiesta has been named the UK’s top-selling car for the fifth successive month.

More than 20,000 were sold in March, taking the total number sold this year to almost 33,000. The Vauxhall Corsa was the month's second-best seller, with just under 15,000 units shifted, and the and Vauxhall Astra were the third and fourth most popular cars respectively.
Other cars included in the top ten were the , Peugeot’s 207 and the fleet-friendly .
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the relative success of the Fiesta and other means these small cars now account for a record 36.6% of the new car market.
The market share of diesels also rose by 3% in March, which suggests new-car buyers are increasingly looking for .
But despite these pockets of good news, overall car sales fell by more than 30% in March and the recession is continuing to play havoc with consumer confidence. As Which? reported last week, carmakers are now and even free payment protection insurance in a bid to attract buyers.
