Volkswagen is extending its cool Scirocco coupé range with a new performance diesel variant.
Using essentially the same engine as the TDI, the new GT TDI is powered by a 2.0-litre turbodiesel with 168bhp. It’s available with six-speed manual or DSG semi-automatic transmissions, both enabling an 8.1 second sprint from 0-62mph.
This means the Scirocco GT TDI is 0.9 seconds slower to the benchmark than the 2.0-litre turbo petrol, which takes just 7.2 seconds. However, the diesel offers brilliant mid-range response thanks to its 258lb ft of torque (pulling power) and remarkable efficiency.
Despite a top speed of 138mph (136mph for the DSG version), the Scirocco TDI returns claimed fuel economy of 53.3mpg on the combined cycle, with low CO2 emissions of 139g/km (147g/km DSG).
GT TDI offers generous equipment
The new engine is available in top-spec GT trim only, which includes dual-zone air conditioning (with separate air temperature settings for driver and passenger), automatic lights and wipers, a six-CD changer, stability control (ESC) and six airbags.
All Sciroccos come with an adaptive chassis control (ACC) package with driver-selectable settings for the suspension, steering and throttle response.
The new Volkswagen Scirocco GT TDI is available to order now. start at £21,755 for the manual, and £23,060 for the DSG.
