Palm Pre

The Palm Pre smartphone will be available in the UK, exclusively to O2, in time for Christmas, according to the Guardian.

The hotly anticipated Palm Pre was first unveiled at this year's CES in Las Vegas, where it impressed our mobile phone expert.

Exclusive deal

O2 is the UK's largest mobile phone operator, and securing this high-profile handset on an exclusive deal could have the same success for O2 that was seen following a similar deal with Apple over the iPhone 3G.

The exclusivity deal between Apple and O2 is expected to come to an end soon, with the iPhone becoming available on other networks including Vodafone and Orange.

Palm Pre US launch

The Palm Pre, which launches in the US next month, has a 3.1 inch touchscreen and a full qwerty keyboard. It features Wi-Fi, a 3.1Mp camera, 8GB of internal memory, and can be charged magnetically.

It has been described as a true rival to the iPhone 3G and is entering an increasingly competitive market, where it will be up against the recently launched HTC Magic, the BlackBerry Storm and the new iPhone, which is expected to be announced next month.

New Apple iPhone

Jon Barrow, Which? mobile phone expert, said: 'The Palm Pre is a great device with a really innovative, and really effective operating system. It strikes me as the first true rival to the iPhone in terms of usability, but we won't know what Apple has up its sleeves until after the expected announcement in San Francisco next month.'

A UK price for the Palm Pre has not yet been confirmed.
