Time to try a Toyota Avensis?

Toyota Avensis

Top choice of new Toyota Avensis models is the turbodiesel Tourer estate

Toyota introduced a new Avensis at the very end of last year - so where are the bargains?

A turbodiesel in the Tourer estate bodystyle is your best bet - Toyota reckoning the Tourer will outsell the saloon for the first time with this generation - and if you shop around you can expect to get approximately £1,700 off a new one. But they are also just starting to hit the used market.

The TR trim level represents maximum value, and used 2.0-litre D-4D turbodiesels start at around £17,499 with a reasonable 4-6,000 miles on the clock. Hodgson Toyota in Gateshead has a couple of examples that fit the bill perfectly. List price is £20,255. A useful £2,756 saving.

However, if you really want a deal on this reliable family saloon, consider a last of the line previous model. Remarkably, Toll House Toyota in Gatwick has one such 2.2-litre D-4D in highly equipped T4 spec (satnav, climate control) on an 09 registration plate. The car has covered just 350 miles.

It’s priced at £16,995, but the dealer will almost certainly be desperate to get rid of it so consider an aggressive offer.

Save more than £6,000 on the Volvo S40

Another innovative online used car dealer for your consideration: Carsite.

Sourcing its stock from major business fleet operations, it claims to save you 20% compared with main dealer used pricing.

But what’s interesting is that while Carsite has a slick website of its own - including extensive descriptions, specifications, photographs and ‘virtual tour’ videos - the cars are also sold via eBay. All are offered with a Buy It Now price, but many are also simply auctioned.

Obviously you can arrange to view the cars in person. But they all include an RAC Inspection, an RAC video road test and a HPI Check. Plus you get a full ‘handover’ pack when you buy.

As an example of its competitive pricing we found a 2008 Volvo S40 2.0-litre diesel in racy R-Design spec being offered Buy It Now at £13,635. List price for a new one is £20,210 - without options. So that’s a £6,575 saving.

But there is a catch. The car has done 28,536 miles since it was registered in April last year.

Lease a Nissan GT-R

Nissan GT-R

Under the bonnet of the Nissan GT-R there's a supercar slaying twin-turbo V6 engine

Finally, something for the wild ones amongst you: the Nissan GT-R.

Now, this £56,795 - minimum - supercar slaying twin-turbo V6 coupé has a waiting list that’s around two years long. You can forget about getting a deal on an outright purchase right now - or delivery anytime soon.

So why not lease one instead. Leasing specialist Jamjar Cars currently has the mighty Nissan in its Special Deals section. Yours to enjoy for £995 a month for three years, plus a £4,000 deposit. If Jamjar can get you one ahead of the queue, that doesn’t actually sound too bad.
