The Palm Pre mobile phone will launch before Christmas in the UK, exclusively on O2.
The announcement was made today by Palm and Telefonica Europe, O2‘s parent company.
Palm Pre UK launch date
A price and an exact launch date have still not been specified, although the statement said that the hotly anticipated Palm Pre handset would become available in Europe ‘in time for the winter holidays’.
The Palm Pre mobile phone was showcased at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It is a slider device, with a full qwerty keypad and a 3.1 inch touchscreen.
‘Home of the smartphone’
Matthew Key, chairmen and CEO at Telefonica Europe, alluded to the new Apple iPhone 3GS – also available exclusively to O2, when he said: ‘We are fast becoming the home of the smartphone with the addition of the hotly anticipated Palm Pre to our already extensive portfolio’.
The Pre boasts 8GB of internal memory and a 3Mp camera, but the main draw of this handset is the Palm Pre’s new Palm web operating system which, unlike the iPhone’s, can run several applications concurrently.
Mobile phone reviews
Jon Barrow, Which? mobile phone expert, said: ‘The Palm Pre is already on sale in the US and has attracted a lot of favourable reviews. I was lucky enough to see the Pre earlier this year at the CES and, although I only spent a few minutes with the device, I was suitably impressed. There has yet to be a smartphone that can rival the Apple iPhone’s simple, user-friendly interface, but the Palm Pre looks like it may be a candidate.’
