Zipcar, which operates dozens of cars in London, said 25% of its members own an iPhone – and that the new app will make it even easier for them to cut their motoring bills.
When users fire up the app, GPS technology will pinpoint all of the available Zipcars in the area. Drivers will then be able to choose from a range of different models before specifying when – and for how long - they would like to borrow the car.
Once the booking is complete, special maps will guide the user to his or her car. If it happens to be parked in a crowded street – and here’s the pièce de résistance – they will be able to locate the car by sounding its horn with their iPhone. A separate button on the phone will unlock the car.
Speaking at the Apple Worldwide Developer’s Conference in California last month, Zipcar’s Luke Schneider said: 'With [their] current location in geocoding, Zipcar members instantly see vehicles in any Zipcar city, such as New York, Boston, Toronto, San Francisco – even London.'
Details on the new Zipcar app are scant at the moment, but it’s expected to be launched in collaboration with Apple later this summer.
