BMW reveals most efficient 3 Series ever. AgainNew 320d EfficientDynamics claims nearly 70mpg
22 August 2009
In June, BMW unveiled the 316d, its greenest ever 3 Series. Two months on and that car is already out of date. Introducing the 320d EfficientDynamics Saloon - it emits just 109g/km of CO2.
BMW says the new 320d EfficientDynamics Saloon is the first ‘premium segment’ car to achieve a sub 110g/km CO2 rating. Volvo might argue that its S40 and V50 , which emit 104g/km, beat BMW to it - but that depends on your definition of premium.
The 320d EfficientDynamics won’t cost you any less in annual road tax than the 118g/km 316d - £35 a year - but the emissions reduction is impressive nonetheless.
Modified 2.0-litre turbodiesel means 68.9mpg
The 320d EfficientDynamics Saloon is powered by a substantially revised version of BMW’s 2.0-litre single-turbo diesel engine. This includes modifications to the engine’s construction, rather than a simple change to the electronics. And the result is an official fuel economy average of 68.9mpg.
Helping the engine in its economy minded efforts, the BMW also benefits from longer gearing, lowered suspension and specially designed aerodynamic alloy wheels with low-rolling resistance . This is in addition to the usual 3 Series EfficientDynamics features: auto start stop, brake energy regeneration and electric power steering.
Performance and equipment still competitive
As for performance, the 320d Efficient Dynamics Saloon has 151bhp, does 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds and offers a 137mph top speed. So it’s no slouch. Equipment levels match those of the regular 320d SE model, including dual-zone air conditioning and rear parking sensors.
No word on pricing yet, but BMW says this ‘is likely to mirror the standard 320d SE Saloon’, which currently starts at £26,680.
The BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Saloon is on sale January 2010.
