Citroen C5

Delivery-mileage Citroën C5 for £13k

It’s nearly September, which means it’s very nearly the start of the 59 registration for new cars. That means dealers will want to get shot of any old 09-plate pre-registered stock they’ve got cluttering up the forecourt. And that means bargains.

Here’s an example. Hartwell dealer group - specifically the Grimsby branch - has 09-plate Citroën C5 saloons with delivery mileage only, ready to go for just £12,999.

The Citroëns are available in black or silver with the 1.6-litre HDi turbodiesel engine, and come in the better equipped VTR+ specification. We can’t do a direct comparison to current new prices, as this trim level has recently been upgraded to include standard satellite navigation. But to give you a clue, this engine in that spec now has a list price of £19,795.

So these pre-registered cars are £6,796 cheaper. That leaves you plenty of spare cash to spend on, say, a portable sat nav.

Renault Mégane

Renault Mégane dCi is frugal and cheap

Save nearly £5k on new Renault Mégane

Alternatively, if you don’t need quite so much space, that £13,000 is more than enough to net you a brand new five-door hatchback.

And not just any old Mégane. We’re talking about a nicely specified Dynamique with the 1.5-litre dCi 106 turbodiesel - an engine that’s torquey, characterful and capable of returning excellent fuel economy.

List price is £17,635, but Nationwide Cars has them on offer for a much more reasonable £12,720. That’s a  £4,915 reduction. We reckon that’s the best price for this model anywhere in the UK - but let us know if you’ve found one cheaper.

Saab 9-5

Saabs, like this 9-5, are now great value

£17,000 saving on used Saab 9-5s

Finally, it's another Saab, and another seriously big saving.

This time it’s the larger Saab 9-5 saloon, available used from Motorpoint. It’s a bit of a non-mainstream example in range-topping Vector Sport trim, combining the fuel-hungry 2.3-litre turbo petrol engine with an economy-sapping automatic gearbox. Still, it is available on a 57-registration plate with less than 15,000 miles on the clock.

The 9-5 saloon is just about to be replaced, and is in fact no longer listed on the Saab UK website (so look out for pre-registered deals; they must be out there). But Motorpoint works out that priced at £10,499, it represents a staggering £17,801 saving over the last new list price for this model.
