Save nearly £7,000 on the outgoing Astra
A press release arrived this week reminding us about Vauxhall’s current scrappage offers ahead of the new '59' registration, which comes into force on 1 September.
Assuming you’ve got a qualifying banger to trade in, highlights include £2,560 off the 1.0-litre Life three-door, bringing its price down to £7,695 on the road. There's also £5,155 off the 1.4-litre Meriva Life, bringing it down to £8,295, plus an truly impressive £6,410 off the Astra 1.4 Life five-door, which is reduced to just £8,995.
However, you can do even better. You’ll still need to have a car to scrap, but dealer group Perrys is shaving even more money off these three offers.
The Corsa comes down a further £200 to £7,495, and the Meriva drops to £7,995, another £300 less than list price. And the Astra? Try £8,495 - £500 cheaper still. All cars are brand spanking new.
It just goes to show that it always pays to shop around - no matter how good a deal you think you’ve found.

Renault Clio TomTom under £10,000
After a compact hatchback with a state-of-the-art integrated satellite navigation system?
Then you could do a lot worse than the TomTom Edition, which features an inexpensive but still quite brilliant updatable sat nav from portable market leaders, TomTom. But there's even better news: Buyacar has stock models available that you can drive straight away at a decent discount.
Choose between the basic 1.2-litre petrol version or the frugal 1.5-litre dCi 86 turbodiesel, both in the three-door bodystyle and both including metallic paint. List price is currently £12,425 (including metallic at £395) for the 1.2 and £14,075 (including metallic) for the 1.5 dCi. Buyacar has them at £9,700 and £10,995, savings of £2,725 and £3,080 respectively.
Get a bargain on a 09-plate Peugeot 107
Save over £2.5k on nearly new Peugeot 107
If the Clio’s too big for you then how about a Peugeot 107 city car?
Trouble is, compared to the slightly more spacious and very well equipped Hyundai i10 (now priced from £7,400) the entry-level £8,095 asking price for the 107 is starting to look expensive. So how about a pre-registered 09-plate 107 for £5,999 from Hartwell?
There’s a selection to chose from, and cars are in the middle-ranking Urban trim with 1.0-litre petrol engine, rather than the basic Urban Lite. Assuming the cars are to the latest spec, that means a £2,595 saving over the £8,595 brand new list price. That’s a big discount on such an inexpensive car.
Interestingly, Hartwell is also running a used car scrappage scheme - meaning you can get £2,000 off certain cars amongst its second hand stock. For example, there’s a 55-plate Citroën C1 Rhythm 1.0, sister car to the 107, that’s available scrap-reduced by £2,000 to £4,995. Frankly, the Peugeot looks a much better deal.
