Sony has unveiled its latest version of the Playstation 3, a slimmed down and cheaper model with 120GB HDD.
The new Sony Playstation 3, also known as the PS3 or the PS3 Slim, will become available to buy in the UK on 1 September 2009 and will cost £249.
Lighter, quieter, slimmer and cheaper PS3
Sony says that the new PS3 features a radical redesign that allows for a slimmer body, weighing approximately two-thirds the original 60GB Playstation 3 that launched in 2006.
The company also claims that the power consumption of the new 120GB PS3 is around two-thirds that of the original 60GB PS3. The new model, which comes in a charcoal black casing, has a textured finish and is claimed to have a quieter cooling fan.
The original PS3 was launched in November 2006, and Sony has released numerous Playstation 3 updates since, mainly increasing the hard disk space included with the Playstation 3. The new PS3 model will allow users to play PlayStation 3 games, as well as doubling as a CD player, a standard DVD player and a Blu-ray Disc player. It can also connect to the Playstation Network to download older Playstation 1 games, as well as watch movies and music videos.
Bravia Sync and PS3
The new model will includes Sony’s Bravia Sync feature, allowing it to be hooked up to a Sony Bravia TV for single remote control operation. Users won’t be able to install a different operating system on the new PlayStation 3, like they could on previous models.
